Intel Shares Slide After Nvidia Reportedly Pauses 18A Chip Testing
Intel's stock took a hit following reports that Nvidia has paused testing of its 18A chip manufacturing process. The decision deals a blow to Intel's efforts to reclaim credibility in advanced semiconductor production, particularly as it seeks to establish U.S. leadership in the sector.
An Intel spokesperson countered the Reuters report, asserting that 18A technology is "progressing well." The company recently inaugurated Fab 52 in Arizona, its first facility to mass-produce chips using the 18A process—touted as the most advanced on American soil.
Intel's domestic push aims to challenge Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and reduce reliance on overseas production. The setback comes despite Nvidia's $5 billion investment in Intel last September, a deal that notably excluded commitments for chip manufacturing.
